Old (Lame) Joke
“What’s it about?”
“It’s about two hours long.”
If it’s any good, then even the most earnest answer would fail to explain. Good stuff is not “about.” Good stuff is.
Still, there are well-meaning people who think it unseemly for a playwright to dodge this maddening question. And who believe, apparently, that a playwright’s inability to encapsulate his work bespeaks confusion or uncertain intent. For them, sincerely but not without grains of salt…
